Kirk and Frankie Muerer started Modular Systems Technologies
(MST) in 1998 when they noticed the need existed in their industry for
“redesigning” office spaces. MST is now a
full service commercial furniture installation company dedicated to excellence
in the installation of modular furniture and related case goods. They have offices in both Independence, Ohio and Florida.
MST provides many services to their customers, including
service and installation, refurbishment, reconfiguration, and project
management. They do 99% of their
business with dealers or direct users. They
employ roughly 35 workers, including his daughter Angie, his son-in-law, his brother
Robbie, and multiple family friends, making it a true “family” business.
Kirk was initially attracted to NFIB for the workers’ compensation
group rating coverage offered through the association. They switched over to NFIB from their past
provider for better rates, service and additional features of the program.
Since joining NFIB Kirk has become very involved with the
organization and has the opportunity to attend the national NFIB Washington DC
Summit numerous times. He also participated in the Small Businesses for
Sensible Regulations fly-in to the Capitol. After meeting the NFIB/Ohio staff
at one of the national Summit meetings he became involved at the state level
and now sits on the Ohio Leadership Council as a voice for fellow members on
issues.
Despite the difficulties and stress of being a
small-business owner, Kirk enjoys being an entrepreneur. He appreciates the flexibility that making
his own schedule provides and he’s happy that he can help family and friends by
providing them with employment.
