Missouri Veto Session Begins Sept. 10

Date: September 02, 2014

The General Assembly will convene on Wednesday, Sept. 10, to consider overriding some of Gov. Jay Nixon’s vetoes.

The governor vetoed over 30 bills during the regular session. He was particularly irked at the legislature for what he called the “Friday Favors,” which were a series of tax cut bills that passed on the last day of session. He says the bills would cost the state $425 million. He also vetoed 134 sections within the appropriations bills, omitting $144 million from the budget.

One question facing lawmakers is whether to override the tax cuts or undo the governor’s 134 edits to the appropriations bill. The other question is whether or the General Assembly can undo all 134 of the edits at once or whether they are required by law to address each one separately. Given the fact they don’t intend to be in session more than a day or two, that determination could answer questions concerning the overall strategy.
