Minimum Wage Bill Clears Legislative Hurdle

Date: March 28, 2014

Here’s a quick look at some of the small-business bills working their way through the Oklahoma legislature:

  • Minimum wage (SB 1023): Sponsored by Sen. Dan Newberry, this measure would prevent cities and counties from setting a minimum wage that’s higher than the federal rate, creating greater predictability for small-business owners. SB 1023 passed the House General Government Committee on March 26 by a vote of 10-2.
  • Liability (HB 3365): Rep. Jon Echols and Sen. Kyle Loveless are sponsoring legislation that deals with rebuttable presumptions against liability for any manufacturer where the product complied with mandatory safety standards or regulations adopted and promulgated by the federal government. It also protects innocent sellers from product liability lawsuits. HB 3365 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 25.
  • Legal reform (HB 3375): The bill, sponsored by Rep. Terry O’Donnell and Sen. Anthony Sykes, would allow parties, upon showing good cause, to obtain discovery regarding any matter that is relevant to any party’s claim or defense by one or more of the following methods: depositions, written interrogatories, production of documents or things or permission to enter property for the purpose of inspection, copies of physical and mental examinations, and authorizations for release of the records. It also provides that in any action in which physical or mental injury is claimed, the party making the claim shall provide to the other parties a release or authorization allowing the parties to obtain relevant medical records and bills, and, when relevant, a release or authorization for employment and scholastic records.
It passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 25.
