Mandated Paid Sick Leave Proposals Come to Michigan

Date: March 31, 2015

Poll: 86 percent of Michigan voters support paid sick leave, despite specter of mass job losses.

Michigan small business would be required by law to give their employees paid sick leave under two new state legislative proposals.

House Bill 4167 and Senate Bill 101 would allow workers to earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Under the proposals, employers would have to offer workers between 40 and 72 hours of paid leave annually, depending on the size of the business.

NFIB State Director Charles Owens opposes the bills.

“Everyone thinks it is a great idea because they think somebody else is paying for it and it’s not them,” Owens told Michigan Capitol Confidential in March.

According to a new poll from Denno Research, 86 percent of Michigan voters support paid sick leave.

Meanwhile, a statewide coalition called the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan launched in March, and is urging state lawmakers to pass mandated paid sick leave.

In response, State Sen. David Robertson, of Grand Blanc Township, told MLive.com he would likely not support the legislation. “I just don’t see how employers can shoulder that cost without putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage.”
