Mandated Paid Leave Becomes Issue in New York

The national debate over whether employers should be forced to provide paid leave to employees has landed with a thud in the Empire State.

Though paid leave was not initially an issue here, a paid leave proposal has been incorporated with a Senate one house state budget proposal, on which a deal was due April 1. Meanwhile, a different paid leave proposal has passed in the State Assembly.

Despite saying earlier this year that he didn’t believe there was an “appetite” for paid leave legislation, Governor Andrew Cuomo has indicated that he is willing to move on the issue.

At press time, NFIB/New York State Director Mike Durant said that the bill could be part of the budget deal or be an active legislative issue for the rest of the session, which is expected to adjourn in the middle of June.
