Main Street Minute with Linnaea DiNallo

Date: May 13, 2014

NFIB/NY is celebrating National Small Business Week by kicking off the Main Street Minute series highlighting small businesses as the backbone of our communities.

New York is home to over 1.5 million small businesses that employ more than 60 percent of the state's workforce. "Small business owners play a critical role in the state and local economies," said NFIB/NY State Director, Mike Durant. "The Main Street Minute series celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners, who create jobs and strengthen our communities."

Tell us about your business.
Waffles, waffles, WAFFLES! Iron Roost is a popular breakfast and lunch destination specializing in gourmet waffles. Our goodies are homemade from scratch and locally sourced whenever possible. We like to say we have a little something for everyone-- sweet, savory, healthy, indulgent and even gluten-free!

What makes the Iron Roost special?
Our entire menu is based on waffles. We have traditional waffles topped with fresh fruit and homemade whip cream. We also have savory waffle sandwiches filled with favorites like our homemade chicken salad or an egg filled southwestern fiesta!

How long have you been a small business owner? Who or what inspired you to become a small business owner?
The Iron Roost has been in business for two years, opening its doors in April 2012. My inspirations were my father and older brother, both of whom own their own businesses. I guess you could say it's in our blood!

What do you most enjoy about running a business?
I love having a unique, creative offering that makes us one-of-a-kind! One of the most satisfying parts of my job is when customers tell me how happy they are that we opened our doors, how delicious the food is and that we have top-notch customer service. My team is talented and dedicated, and together, we do great things!

What surprises have you encountered in running a business?
To be honest, I can't believe how quickly we've grown and how people have taken to our waffle concept. It's a great feeling to see my vision come to life!

What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day is brand new and different than the day before. I think the ever-changing schedule is what keeps my job interesting and free from monotony. But if I had to list a few typical things...Drink coffee. Check in with Chef. Scan some emails. Drink more coffee. Chat with guests. Pay some bills. Sample Chef's new creations. Make some phone calls. Work on marketing. Check the mail. Drink even more coffee! Lots to do, all the time, but that's what I love!

Are you involved in the community? What types of activities do you support?
We do our best to donate to a variety of local community fundraising and charitable organizations. Iron Roost is celebrating its second anniversary with a Customer Appreciation Day featuring music, free coffee, chair massages, balloon artists, a bouncy bounce, contests and waffles, of course!

Iron Roost is located in a renovated building in the downtown historical district of Ballston Spa, New York. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM
