LAWMAKERS POISED TO HEAR FROM SMALL BUSINESSES FRUSTRATED WITH STATE TAX LAWS

HARTFORD
(September 16, 2015) – Members of the state tax panel are preparing for this
evening’s public hearing that will help determine what recommendations are
presented to the legislature regarding Connecticut’s burdensome tax code.
Previously, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) had
encouraged their members to testify before the panel with suggestions on where
to begin the reforms that bog down small business in the state.

“For
the most part, our members are frustrated with the high, complicated and
inconsistent tax structure currently crippling the state’s economy,” said NFIB
Connecticut State Director, Andrew Markowski. “Today’s tax panel presents a
unique opportunity for the state’s largest employer, small business owners, to
speak directly to experts more than capable of making recommendations to
correct the mistakes of lawmakers’ pasts.”

NFIB
supported the creation of the tax panel which was established via legislation
last year. The public hearing will take place tonight from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm in
Room 2E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. It is unclear if there
will be more than one public hearing by the tax panel, however the panel is
legally bound to present the legislature with their recommendations before the
end of the year.

“It’s
incumbent upon the members of the panel to listen carefully to the concerns
that they are presented with this evening. Small business owners are on the
front lines every day fighting the burdensome bureaucracy
that Connecticut’s tax code has morphed into and I’m hopeful that
solutions will be created from today’s testimonies. Lawmakers have gotten into
the bad habit of picking winners and losers when it comes to our tax code
instead of focusing on across the board fairness but today the tide can begin
to turn,” concluded Markowski.
