Kentucky won't elect a new governor until 2015, but candidates from both parties already are getting in position.
The recent withdrawal of former state Auditor Crit Luallen has opened the field in the Democratic race. Attorney General Jack Conway is a likely candidate, and current Auditor Adam Edelen is expected to announce as well.
The Republican field currently includes former Louisville Metro Councilman Hal Heiner and current Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer.
Even though the focus this year will be on state House races as well as the U.S. Senate race--the NFIB SAFE (Save America's Free Enterprise) Trust has endorsed Sen. Mitch McConnell for another term--politicos will be watching as the gubernatorial race unfolds.
