Iowa Earns an "A" for Manufacturing Health

Date: August 04, 2015

But state only gets a "D" for its tax climate.

Iowa received glowing marks for the health of its manufacturing sector in a new study. The Manufacturing and Logistics National Report gave the state’s manufacturing vitality an A, one of only five states to receive the highest grade.

Manufacturing, which makes up more than 11 percent of the state’s economy, includes many small businesses. This is the seventh straight year Iowa has earned an A.

In contrast, Minnesota and Wisconsin earned B’s, while Illinois, Missouri and Nebraska all received C’s.

The report card, sponsored by Conexus Indiana and produced by Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research, looked at three factors—the share of total income earned by manufacturing employees, the wage premium paid to manufacturing workers relative to other states, and the share of manufacturing employment per capita.

Iowa fared considerably worse in the tax climate category—the study gave the state a D.
