Indiana Repeals Common Construction Wage

Date: May 05, 2015

Indiana lawmakers in April repealed the state’s common construction wage—a victory for small business owners and taxpayers across the state.

“Repealing the common construction wage will create more jobs for hard working Hoosiers and allow the free market to finally take hold when it comes to constructing public projects,” NFIB Indiana State Director Barbara Quandt said. “We commend the 27 members
of the Indiana Senate, 55 members of the House and
Governor Pence who all had the courage and tenacity to stand up to the
unions and their rhetoric and do what they knew in their hearts was best for
the economic recovery of our state.

Controversial one among some constituencies, the measure caused members of Big Labor to storm the lawns outside the Statehouse in protest in March.

The measure applies to public projects above $350,000, and would eliminate local labor boards setting artificial prices for contractors working on those projects. The agenda item was near the top of Gov. Mike Pence’s and NFIB’s wishlist.

Quandt says studies of the outdated law indicate it inflated public project costs by nearly 20 percent.
