In NFIB-Hosted Teleconference, Jeb Bush Discusses Broad Array Of Issues

Date: November 18, 2015

Republican Candidate And Former Florida Governor Answers Questions From Small Businesses

On Tuesday, six business groups including the National Federation of Independent Businesses hosted a teleconference for members to ask questions to Republican presidential candidate and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. The Business Journals reported that during the event, Bush pointed out that Florida “led the nation in job creation” while he was governor, and that he has the “hands-on experience to fix things” that could help the US economy grow. Bush touched upon an array of policy areas during his discussion, but the Business Journals reported there were five key themes highlighted: Bush wants to make the tax code simpler, scale back regulations, repeal Obamacare in favor of a consumer-driven marketplace, reform the Export-Import bank, and collect sales taxes on online sales. Bush’s tax plan calls for “only three individual income tax brackets: 10 percent, 25 percent and 28 percent.” These rates would also “apply to most small businesses, since they tend to be pass-through entities whose profits are subject to individual income taxes.” Bush also wants to reduce the tax rate for corporations from its current 35 percent down to 20 percent, tax capital gains at a 20 percent rate, and eliminate the estate tax. While business would be able to “immediately deduct all the cost of new investments,” he plans to also “eliminate many deductions for both individuals and businesses.”

What This Means For Small Businesses

Small business owners have often been overlooked during the 2016 presidential campaign, with a lot of media attention focused on squabbles between candidates or on sound bytes from the latest presidential debate rather than on addressing substantive issues that are key for small businesses. An opportunity to bring small businesses’ questions to presidential candidates is a welcome addition to the public discourse during this campaign season, and will hopefully prompt further discussion of the issues important to the small business community.
