Holgate Lumber Co. Continues Membership Through The Generations

Date: May 22, 2015

Brian Tilse’s small business experience began when his
grandfather, two uncles, mother and father incorporated Waisner Construction
Company in 1973. Headquartered in the family home, the company built homes,
barns and everything in between for Holgate and the surrounding communities. In
1990, the company purchased Holgate Lumber Company to expand from their house.

After acquiring the lumber yard, the firm formed the
daughter companies of Holgate Lumber Company, HLC Buildings and Buckeye
Building Solutions. They bought construction materials from themselves, and the
business grew. In 1995, the family bought Napoleon Lumber.

Afterwards, the businesses split for a short time, but Brian
came back in 1999. Holgate Lumber sells both construction and retail lumber
along with garden and building supplies from Buckeye Building Solutions, while
they also build residential, agricultural and commercial structures under HLC
Buildings.

Tilse feels the challenges of small business but also finds
joy in the freedom and familiarity associated with a small company. Handling
expansion is Holgate Lumber Company’s primary obstacle; they’ve had to move
offices and start a full service lumber yard from scratch.

Additionally, Tilse cites tax rates as a legislative
challenge to business, though he finds that the state is making it friendlier
to do business. Despite these hurdles, Tilse enjoys the liberty of making his
own schedule as a small business owner. Additionally, he finds Holgate Lumber
Company to be a true family business as seven of 20 employees are family
members, making it easier to know the company from the top-down and vice versa.

Though Tilse will be the first to admit that he’s not overly
political, he likes receiving information from the NFIB to keep him up to date
on relevant small business issues. Additionally, the owner attends the Area Action
Council meetings in Archbold on a regular basis to stay involved. Though
Tilse’s business was already a member of the NFIB when he took over, he
maintains membership to have a voice in government as a small business owner.
