Issue Overview: HB 124 calls for the gas tax to be adjusted annually based on the rate of inflation in the consumer price index for the Northeast states. A one-cent increase in the gas tax would generate about $8.4 million for the state highway fund. HB 644 proposes an increase of 15 cents, spread over three years (2009-2011) for the gas tax and over five years (2009-2013) for the diesel fuel tax. HB 644 would increase the state highway fund by $49.8 million in 2010, $85.1 million in 2011, and by $117.4 million when fully implemented in 2013.

NFIB Position: Members have not yet established a position on these bills.

Issue Status: HB 124 is currently in the House Public Works & Highways Committee. HB 644, which received initial support of 190-162 in the House, is currently in the House Ways & Means Committee.
