From Your Executive Director: Small Business in Jeopardy

Business
Agenda Jeopardized by Medicaid Fight

With only two weeks of the regular Legislative Session remaining, a tremendous
pro-business agenda hangs in the balance.
The feds’ decision to withhold Low Income Pool funding in an effort to
coerce the Legislature into expanding Medicaid has placed many priorities of
the small business community in jeopardy this year.

The Medicaid expansion battle continues to set the tone in Tallahassee, and no
bill is heard without the shadow of the debate hanging overhead. The Senate
remains committed to their expansion plan, while the House remains opposed,
making the chances for pre-May 1 agreement between the two bodies slim. This

The House this week passed its “No Tax Is Safe” tax cut package, which included
many of NFIB’s top tax relief priorities –the reduction in the sales tax on
commercial leases, the reduction in the communications services tax, and the
small business Saturday sales tax holiday. But it appears that even the “No Tax
Is Safe” package isn’t safe itself, as a substantial budget chasm between the
two houses persists and the full Senate has yet to take up the pro-business
cuts.

One bright spot however is our direct primary care legislation, which continues
to move forward. This innovative health care model addresses one of your
biggest challenges – providing health care to your employees at a reasonable
cost. Here’s a news clip of where we are this week: http://bit.ly/1DjewpV

The final weeks of session are sure to be full of action, and conflict, so stay
tuned by following is on Twitter and Facebook.
