To help small business owners learn about new requirements under the Hazard Communication Standard, the American Supply Association is offering two free webinars.
In 1983, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration enacted the HCS to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classified, and that the information on the classified standards is communicated to employers and their employees through a comprehensive hazard communication program, container labeling, Material Safety Data Sheets, and employee training.
In 2012, OSHA aligned the HCS with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. This realignment means that employers in the United States must meet a series of phase-in dates to comply with OSHA HCS 2012; starting with the requirement to train employees on the new GHS label elements and new Safety Data Sheet format by December 1, 2013.
