For the legislative week ending January 23

Date: January 23, 2015

The big news this week was Gov. Bill Walker’s State-of-the-State address and then his proposed state budget.

He says he is cutting the budget. We wish him well.
A few new bills were introduced, none of earth-shaking importance to small business. Hearings on departments have started and will continue through next week. We should see some bill hearings start next week as well.
On NFIB’s support list at the moment are House Bill 64, exempting Alaska from Daylight Savings Time, and its companion measures, Senate Bill 6 and Senate Bill 11.
On NFIB’s oppose list, so far, are House Bill 18, Medicaid expansion and Senate Bill 12, mandating paid sick leave.
On NFIB’s watch list are:
  • Student exemptions from the Wage Hour Act (House Bill 2)
  • Veteran preference treatment (House Bill 6, Senate Bill 2)
  • Sexual orientation discrimination (House Bill 19, House Bill 42, Senate Bill 20)
  • Controlled substances in workers’ compensation (House Bill 31)
  • Drug testing and workers’ compensation (House Bill 32)
  • Registration of health-care navigators (House Bill 33)
  • Permanent partial disability (House Bill 34)
  • Penalizing employees (House Bill 60, Senate Bill 25)
  • Smoking in the workplace (Senate Bill 1)
  • Loss of income due to restitution (Senate Bill 5)
  • Energy price gouging (Senate Bill 10)
