Board to Consider Raising Tipped Wage in NY

Date: October 15, 2014

In the coming months, a three-member board appointed by Governor Cuomo will consider making changes to the regulations that govern the minimum wage for tipped food service and hospitality workers in New York State. Food service workers currently earn $5.00/hr., while hospitality workers earn $5.65/hr.

The board is required to hold at least two public hearings and will submit recommendations to the Commissioner of Labor following the hearings. The Commissioner will accept or revise the recommendations and issue a final determination by February of 2015. An estimated 230,000 tipped workers could be impacted by the determination.

NFIB/NY will be weighing in on the discussion on behalf of members who employ workers earning the tipped minimum wage. If your business will be impacted by an increase in tipped wages, please send comments to State Director, Mike Durant, by November 14, 2014
