EXHAUSTED WITH LAWMAKERS, SMALL BUSINESS LOOKS TO NEXT YEAR FOR REFORM

HARTFORD (June 3, 2015): After an exhaustive budget session
this year that resulted in a massive blow to the economy in Connecticut, the
National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is begging lawmakers to make
major economic reforms the priority for the next legislative season.

“In order to avoid a repeat of this year’s process, it will
be incumbent upon lawmakers to make significant changes to their approach to the
budget in the future. They must begin by calculating revenue first and spending
second. Everything must be on the table for the future including addressing
unsustainable pension and healthcare costs.” According to NFIB Connecticut
State Director Andrew Markowski, “It will take significantly creative reforms
to turn Connecticut’s economy around, and at this point, all small business can
do is hope that this year’s eleventh hour debacle will wake up lawmakers to
finally heed the warnings that so many have expressed.”

Democratic lawmakers as well as Governor Malloy hit a road
block late Monday night when
multiple corporations joined NFIB in voicing their opposition to the budget
deal that will drive up taxes and according to NFIB, GE, Aetna and Travelers,
send businesses of all sizes fleeing for states with a more hospitable business
climate.

“Small business couldn’t agree more with GE, Aetna and
Travelers in expressing our concerns with the ultimate impact that this budget
will have economically on those that are struggling daily to pay their taxes
and run their businesses. If the state government was held to the same
accounting standard as our members are, they would be calculating revenue prior
to planning for spending instead of writing themselves a blank check.”
