Election Report From State Director Riley Johnson

Date: November 06, 2014

The 2014 General Election on November 4 was a banner day for small businesses in Montana, and for the nearly 6,000 NFIB/Montana members statewide.
There were 12 Senate candidates and 42 House of Representative candidates that earned the NFIB’s Guardian of Small Business Award and endorsement for the General Election. All 12 of the Senate candidates won their elections, while 38 of the House candidates won their elections. That gave NFIB/Montana a 93-percent success ratio, and helped the strong, small business-mined lawmakers maintain a significant majority in both the House and the Senate.
Republicans will hold a 29-to-21 majority in the Montana Senate for the upcoming 2015 legislative session, while the Republicans will hold a 59-to-41 majority in the Montana House. This could vary slightly, as at least two races, one in the Senate and one in the House, may require recounts. The margin of victory in the Senate race in Missoula was only seven votes, and a 20-vote margin in a Helena House race. These races will be finalized before December 1.
On the national political front, two strong advocates for small business won the open races for the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. NFIB/Montana endorsed and actively supported both Rep. Steve Daines for the Senate race and State Senator Ryan Zinke for the House. Each of these candidates won 50 of Montana’s 56 counties. The Daines victory helped put the Republicans back into the majority in the U.S. Senate.
The 64th Montana Legislature begins January 5, 2015 in Helena.
