Election Report From State Director Jan Meekcoms

Date: November 07, 2014

While many other states went in the direction of red, Oregon went bluer.  We congratulate Gov. John Kitzhaber on being elected to an unprecedented fourth term as Oregon’s governor.  We look forward to working with him and his administration in support of Oregon’s economic base – small business – to grow Oregon’s economy.
Election 2014 was not the election small businesses had hoped for …
  • Oregon lags the nation in average income per capita
  • maintains higher than the U.S. average unemployment
  • has one of the highest marginal tax rates
  • and dismal education stats at 43rd in outcomes and #49 in high school graduations …
… but Oregon voters decided to stay the course.  At NFIB Oregon, we will continue to be your voice in government to protect what you built.
In the Oregon State Senate, Democrats increased their majority by one from 16 to 14 to 17 to 12. Likewise in the Oregon House, where Democrats picked up one seat to increase their majority from 34 to 26 to 35 to 25.
Of the eight State Senate candidates NFIB/Oregon endorsed in, five won their races. While of the 32 House candidates endorsed by NFIB, 25 won their races. NFIB/Oregon is especially proud of the eight NFIB members who were elected on November 4:
  • Kim Thatcher (SD 13)
  • Alan Olsen (SD 20)
  • Chuck Thomsen (SD 26)
  • Dallas Heard (HD 2)
  • Carl Wilson (HD 3)
  • Gene Whisnant (HD 53)
  • Greg Barreto (HD 58)
  • John Huffman (HD 59).
Their experience and wisdom will bode well for small business in the 2015 session.  We thank them for stepping up to the challenge and congratulate them for their success.
