SALEM, Ore., Nov. 25, 2014—Why stand still in a long checkout line at a big, impersonal mall store this Friday when you could be doing the Funky Munky on Main Street the Saturday after?
So asked Jan Meekcoms, Oregon state director for the National Federation of Independent Business, America’s voice of small business, after looking over a representative sample of the types of Oregon Main Street enterprises that took advantage of NFIB’s free offer to post information about their shops for Small Business Saturday on November 29.
“Our joint campaign with American Express to steal some of Black Friday’s thunder for Small Business Saturday is paying nice dividends for our national economy,” said Meekcoms. “Now in its fifth year, I predict awareness of Small Business Saturday will top 75 percent and sales at local, independent firms to exceed the $5.7 billion after last year’s promotion.
“The variety Main Street offers over the suburban mall is more delightful and educational. In looking over our list, we have businesses sewing baby booties, repairing upholstery, putting on new roofs, and, in a case of perhaps being a little too good with hands, serving summonses – depending, of course, on which side of the lawsuit you find yourself. We also have the Funky Munky and Shabby Chic offering goods on consignment.”
Amex also offered small businesses to advertise their wares on its website. Oregon, mom-and-pop firms signing up for NFIB’s offer included:
