Thompson & Sons Inc., a wholesale bakery supply
distributer, is currently owned by Don Thompson and is located in Dillonville,
Ohio. Thompson & Sons began its
farming operation in 1929 by a small group of farmers, with the idea to open a
Feed Mill. Don’s grandfather, Paul
Thompson Sr., was chosen to lead the group and headed up the business from
there. When his sons, Lewis and Paul
Jr., were old enough they started to assist with the day to day operations and
became equal shareholders. Then in 1981
Paul Jr.’s oldest son Don returned home to run the business as a third
generation owner.
Although the company originally began as a feed mill, they
quickly realized there was a huge need for bakery supplies in the Ohio Valley
area. Mom and Pop grocery stores needed
a supplier for their flour, sugar, and other baking supplies, and so the
business stepped up to fill this niche. In
1962, when General Mills asked Paul Thompson to supply the bakeries in
Clarksburg, VW they officially became the wholesale bakery supply distributer
that they are today.
Over the years, Thompson & Sons has grown
tremendously. They now work with over
200 suppliers and employee 20 individuals.
The majority of their customers remain family owned bakeries. They understand
that customer service is the key to their success. In order to fully meet the customers’ needs,
Thompson & Sons prides themselves on knowing the ins and outs of their
products. Their drivers are so attentive
to customer needs that not only do they deliver their products but they will
also restock and clean the area where the product belongs.
Thompson & Sons sought out to join NFIB after they were
impressed by an article that they read over 30 years ago and has maintained
their membership ever since. Don thinks
that being a part of NFIB is important because they as a small business, “Don’t
have time to do what NFIB does…talking to politicians.” He believes that NFIB is good at getting in front
of people and letting them know what needs to happen to help small
businesses. Don is pleased with the
advocacy NFIB does on his behalf and he enjoys reading all the updates and
information that are sent to our members.
