CMS Approves Medicaid Waiver for Arkansas

Date: October 08, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Oct. 8, 2013--The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ has approved Arkansas’ Medicaid waiver, which allows the state to move forward with its plan to use Patient Protectin and Affordable Care Act funding to buy health coverage for adults with incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level through the insurance exchange, rather than through a traditional Medicaid expansion.

This indicates CMS’ willingness to work with states interested in implementing alternatives to a traditional Medicaid expansion under the ACA.

The decision is welcome news to small-business owners because it will allow for more people to be covered under Medicaid without expanding Medicaid itself, which should keep costs in check and help avoid a tax increase on employers.
