Private sector needs room to grow
Chris Christie said at a speech to the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce in February that the private sector needs more room to grow, and the best way to make that happen is to shrink the state’s government.
“We need to continue, in my view, to shrink the public sector in the state so that it gives the room for our private sector to grow even more by making government less expensive,” Christie said.
Christie touted his administration’s reform of the state’s pension and health benefits system.
“The way to grow the economy is to make it profitable for business to grow the economy,” he said.
NFIB/New Jersey State Director Laurie Ehlbeck said one the most important things state lawmakers can do this session to protect business-friendly gains made in recent years is to vote down mandated paid sick leave legislation.
Paid leave has been released from the Assembly’s Labor Committee and has been sent to the Assembly for a vote. The Assembly is eager to pass this legislation, but rumor has it the Senate is a bit hesitant.
“I believe the governor will veto the legislation,” Ehlbeck says. “However, many municipalities are passing local ordinances requiring that employers provide sick leave.”
Question: What does New Jersey need to do to make the state more business friendly?
