Cheyenne Stop On Federal Balanced Budget Tour

Date: January 28, 2015

Top Wyoming policymakers were briefed, January 22, on a national push to amend the U.S. Constitution to make a balanced federal budget the law of the land.
Visiting the state to make the pitch was Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the nation’s preeminent spokesman for a balanced federal budget. Kasich was one of the architects of the last balanced federal budget (1997) when he served as chairman of the Budget Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. He doesn’t believe, however, that Congress has it in it to balance the books again.
In a report by the Casper Star-Tribune on the news conference, which NFIB helped organize, Kasich said, “It’s immoral for grownups to spend our kids’ inheritance … I feel that way personally in regard to my own children, but also we’re not treating the children of our country right … Today, our federal government has accrued $18 trillion in debt.”
Also quoted in the Star-Tribune article was NFIB/Wyoming State Director Tony Gagliardi, who “said his members get questions all the time about why they are not expanding or why they’re not hiring more people. It’s uncertainty created in Washington, D.C., he said. ‘That is why our support is behind the balanced budget amendment.’ “
Article V of the U.S. Constitution provides for two equally valid ways to propose constitutional amendments, one is by way of the Congress and the other through a Convention of the States. Article V requires two-thirds (34) state legislatures to adopt similar Balanced Budget Amendment resolutions to call the convention—24 state already have. Wyoming is one of 10 states supporters are hoping join the effort. Once Congress receives petitions from 34 states, Congress must call for the convention—it has no say in the matter. “This is a movement that is happening,” said Rep. Tyler Lindholm, according to the newspaper report. “This isn’t something some ranch kid out of Sundance thought out. It’s on its way.” Lindholm is sponsoring House Joint Resolution 4, which would have Wyoming join the cause.
“This is probably the most important issue that is going to face our state and the nation,” said Sen. Ogden Driskill of Devils Tower, a bill co-sponsor. Also quoted was Sen. Larry Hicks of Baggs, another co-sponsor. “It’s time now for the states, which created the federal government, to regain control of the United States of America.”
