Chabot to Chair U.S. House Small Biz Committee

Date: February 04, 2015

NFIB: Appointment is a win for small businesses in Ohio, and across the nation

An NFIB Ohio-backed Congressman was tapped to chair the U.S. House Small Business Committee.

U.S. Rep Steve Chabot, the Westwood Republican endorsed by NFIB in his re-election bid, will lead the powerful committee.

In his first move, Chabot introduced the Small Business Regulatory Flexibility Improvement Act of 2015, which  would promote greater input from businesses during the regulatory drafting process.

“Regulatory uncertainty ranks as a major concern for small businesses,” said Roger R. Geiger, vice president & executive director, NFIB/Ohio. “It is one of the forces that negatively impacts their decisions when they plan for future growth. While our members understand regulation is necessary, it should strive to be more sensible.”

Chabot earned the post amid other interested lawmakers, including Colorado’s Scott Tipton as well as Chris Collins and Richard Hanna of New York.

“Chabot has a strong record of supporting small business legislative initiatives, including regulatory reform, simplifying the tax code and addressing provisions important to employers in Obamacare,” according to an Oct. 23 NFIB statement ahead of November elections. Chabot authored the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act, the Small Business Investment Company Modernization Act  and the Promoting Startup Innovation Act, according to the statement.

Chabot vowed to work to “make life better for small businesses.”

“Unfortunately, in the last six years, small businesses have shouldered the disproportionate burden of new regulations, higher taxes and more difficult barriers to the capital needed to grow. The Obama Administration’s policies—from Dodd-Frank, to Obamacare, to an emboldened EPA—have made operating a business or starting a new business more challenging than ever before,” Chabot said.

Question: What do you think of Chabot’s appointment mean for small business?
