Video: How to Avoid Liability for Your Employees’ Bad Driving

If your small business employees drive company or personal vehicles while on the job, you could be liable for their actions behind the wheel. Beth Milito of the NFIB Small Business Legal Center says employers can be sued for their employees' accidents on the job and need to take action to protect their businesses and employees. "You need to stop bad or impaired drivers," Milito says, including those who might be impaired or have a history of reckless driving.

Milito suggests that it's a good idea to provide transportation for workers who might feel ill or seem impaired. "Cab fare will be a bargain compared to a lawsuit," Milito says. Milito also says employers should actively take steps to discourage distracted driving such as texting or talking on mobile phones.
