Birmingham Named Top City for Millennial Small Business Owners

Date: November 04, 2015

Young owners love local business climate.

Birmingham has been named the No. 1 city in the U.S. for millennial entrepreneurs by Thumbtack.

Economists at Thumbtack broke down the 2015 Small Business Friendliness Survey to find the cities where small business owners aged 34 and under are happiest with the local business climate. Birmingham received mostly A’s in the survey, including for ease of hiring, ease of starting a business and zoning.

The top 10:

  1. Birmingham, Alabama

  2. Boise, Idaho

  3. Boulder, Colorado

  4. Nashville, Tennessee

  5. Manchester, New Hampshire

  6. Charleston, South Carolina

  7. Knoxville, Tennessee

  8. Austin, Texas

  9. Durham, North Carolina

  10. Richmond, Virginia

Like other business owners in the Thumbtack survey, millennials wanted the federal government to focus on the federal budget deficit and health care costs. But they put more emphasis on student loans and taxes than older business owners.

A 2014 study found that 66 percent of U.S. millennials are interested in starting their own business, though their actual rate so far of starting businesses has been low.
