Rep. Denny Hopkins and Sen. Will Kraus have introduced bills designed to reign in the Missouri Department of Revenue.
In what’s widely seen as a major overreach, Revenue has been asking for back sales taxes from companies that they now deemed “entertainment” businesses, including gyms, dance studio and martial arts studious.
Many of these small businesses are getting tax bills they can’t afford to pay.
NFIB/Missouri is working with lawmakers in the House and Senate to fix this problem.
In related news, Representative Hopkins has introduced a bill that would shift the burden of proof in tax disputes from the taxpayer to the Department of Revenue, which is how it already works with the IRS.
