STATEMENT: Small Business Urges Lawmakers to Override Veto on Local Minimum Wage Bill

Date: July 10, 2015

Brad Jones, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement today in response to Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of House Bill 722, a bill that would have prevented local governments from their own minimum wages:

“The small business members of the NFIB are deeply disappointed by Governor Nixon’s veto of H.B. 722.

“We believe that the minimum wage should be consistent throughout the state and that allowing local governments to mandate their own higher wages will create hardships for many small, family businesses. Our members believe that raising the cost of labor in one city or county will put them at a competitive disadvantage with businesses just a few miles down the road.

“That’s why NFIB/Missouri is urging the Legislature to override the governor’s veto of H.B. 722 and ensure there is a consistent minimum wage throughout the state.”

NFIB/Missouri is the state’s leading small-business association, with over 8,000 dues-paying member businesses representing a cross section of the state’s economy. To learn more, visit www.NFIB.com/MO or follow @NFIB_MO on Twitter.
