Area Action Council Program Connects Members with their Public Officials

Date: December 04, 2013

Local legislators and statewide officials addressed hundreds of NFIB members at breakfasts and lunches throughout the state as a part of NFIB/Ohio’s Area Action Council (AAC) program.  Nearly 400 NFIB members in 20 AAC locations across Ohio heard from 28 members of the Ohio General Assembly, as well as Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith French and Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, on the issues important to small business.

From healthcare and workers’ compensation, to taxes and workforce development, speakers covered a gamut of topics, addressed member questions, and talked about the importance of meeting with elected officials.

“These are the types of groups where we can get ideas and concepts that we can take to Columbus and turn into positive law,” Representative Christina Hagan, an NFIB member legislator, told fellow members in Canton.  “I really appreciate this group of folks.”

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted echoed those remarks, saying “What NFIB does can really help educate the members of the legislature.”

The NFIB AAC program is a volunteer program designed to raise greater awareness within the general membership and expand member influence.  AAC participants provide input and counsel into the public policy, activism, development, communications, political, and membership development agenda of NFIB.  Meetings address policy issues, as well as provide a forum for NFIB members to speak with local elected leaders, including members of the General Assembly, statewide officials and congressional representatives.

The next round of AAC meetings will take place in January and February of 2014, with a focus on the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), its effects on the economy, and what options are available for your small business.
