After Five Years, Small Business Still Confused and Disappointed by Affordable Care Act
National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) says most small business owners are not celebrating Obamacare’s birthday

Washington, D.C., March 23, 2015 – The Affordable Care Act turns five today and while the administration is commemorating the occasion there is not much for small businesses to celebrate, said the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

“Premiums are higher and choices are fewer, so there’s not much to celebrate among small business owners,” said Dan Danner, CEO and President of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell today brushed aside the law’s obvious shortcomings, pointing out that “entrepreneurs can take a chance on a great idea, instead of being locked into a job solely to keep their health insurance.”

But the law has increased the cost of insurance, Danner pointed out, and it mandates that everyone has it.

“The cost of insurance has been the top concern for small business owners for two decades and the Affordable Care Act has failed entirely to address that problem,” he said.

NFIB has been researching for two years how the ACA is affecting small businesses.  Sixty two percent of owners reported in 2014 that their premiums increased.  Only eight percent said their costs dropped.

“One in 10 small businesses had their policies cancelled, under the law.  Two thirds are paying higher premiums.  Almost no one is using the SHOP Exchange according to the government’s own enrollment data and to the extent that there are subsidies available in the form of tax credits, they’re complicated, temporary and too small to offset the costs.”
