Another California City To Consider Minimum Wage Hike

Date: September 01, 2015

San Jose City Council To Study Wage Increase

San Jose is the latest California city to consider a minimum wage increase in the near future. Mayor Sam Liccardo and City Council members Chappie Jones and Manh Nguyen urged a council committee to approve a measure to study an increase in the city’s minimum wage, the San Jose (CA) Mercury News reported, a move that comes after the city’s voters in 2012 approved a measure to increase the minimum wage to $10. California’s state minimum wage is set to rise to $10 per hour in January.

What Happens Next

San Jose’s City Council approved the Mayor and council members’ request for a study, though it’s unclear what the committee conducting the study’s recommendation on wages will be. That committee will be chaired by the mayor. The Mercury News suggested the study is likely to leave the Council with a recommendation to increase the city’s wage to $15 per hour, in line with Los Angeles and San Francisco’s recent increases.

What This Means For Small Businesses

California’s small business owners are under attack when it comes to wages. In 2015, city, state, and county governments have all made it a priority to discuss increasing minimum wages, a move that places small businesses at an unfair disadvantage over larger companies that can more easily absorb the overhead expenses associated with wage increases. San Jose’s move to study a wage hike is just the latest anti-business move against California’s small businesses. Unfortunately, the issue has gained popularity among the state’s voters and legislators, and pressure to boost wages in San Jose and elsewhere is only likely to grow into 2016.
