2015 Challenges in the Hawaii Legislature

Date: June 30, 2014

A look ahead at the small-business agenda

More issues are certain to surface before the 28th Hawaii State Legislature convenes for business in January, 2015, but three in particular already pose challenges to small business.

Modify Personal Liability Law
NFIB/Hawaii will continue to remind lawmakers about the negative impact of holding business owners personally liable for excise taxes of a corporation or limited liability companies.

Defeat “Successor” Employee Bill, Again
NFIB/Hawaii will work to oppose proposals to require the purchaser of a company to hire 100 percent of the seller’s employees.

Continue Fight Against Increasing Excise Tax
NFIB/Hawaii will continue to advocate against increases in the state’s general excise tax rate. We have worked to defeat attempts in the past that could have raised the excise tax to 5.5 percent on Oahu and 5 percent elsewhere in the state.
